City of Mozart, Marzipan combined with pistachio, covered in dark chocolate, or Sound of Music and Christmas markets? Besides Vienna, Austria has more beautiful cities, and Salzburg is one hidden treasure. Dream now, visit later.

Morning – Walking tour in Salzburg

Only 10 minutes walk from Salzburg central train station, my first stop was the Mirabell Garden and Palace, now a UNESCO World heritage site, reminiscing also of Julie Andrews in Sound of Music.

From every city I traveled I learned lessons – Salzburg is the birthplace of famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and now I know the original round shaped bonbons “Mozartkugeln” have been manufactured by chocolate confectionary Paul Fürst.

Composer Mozart birth house, or Mozarts Geburtshaus, located at Getreidegasse, now also a museum on the shopping street for more than souvenirs in the Altstadt. Next, walking in Altstadt on the pretty alleys of the old town until reaching Kapitelplatz or Salzburg Cathedral in Domplatz.

Last stop, Hohensalzburg Fortress for one great view over the city or the Bavarian Alps, on top of the Festungsberg Hill – is my favorite sight combined with a workout before lunch.

Afternoon – Coffee & chocolate, plus chocolate

In the afternoon, a stop at a cozy traditional Austrian coffee house for Kaffee und kuchen. Why not order Kleiner Schwarzer (espresso) with apple strudel at Café Tomaselli, “only” a 300 years old institution in the heart of Salzburg Old Town.

Followed by visits at famous chocolate confectionary houses that are in the family for generations, for those original Mozartkugeln or at Schokoladen & Confiserie Holzemayr at Alter Markt 7.

And I though I speak German before traveling to Austria. But the regional words have made me wonder. Plus I learned new words in bakeries, as Krapfenbrezen, Apfelspieße or Brandteigringe. They taste and look better then they sound. See below:

Evening Lights

Dream now, visit later, as is the motto of the www.salzburg.info, where I went to read more about Salzburg and refresh my memory.

Salzburg is beautiful year round, but is most festive during the winter holidays with Christmas lights.

Just imagine walking in the evening in Rezidenzplatz or Domplatz with all the Baroque buildings, surrounded by Christmas decorations. Not before leaving Salzburg, stopping at a Christmas market for mulled wine and another traditional Austrian dessert – Kaiserschmarrn (scrambled pancake).
