A Spanish island

Looking back at summer stories and my notes from the road. But first, coffee with ice cream and chocolate with fresh figs, just as I had in a Balearic Island. Summers where I find myself across different European countries or cultures is a story I want to be part of.

Palma – Sóller – Valldemossa

There is plenty to do near the Majorcan coastline, and the trip started with a vintage electric train (dating back to 1911). The historic route takes you from the south of Palma’s Plaça d’Espanya until the small town of Sóller, in the northwestern coast of the island. The most special part was that it went through the UNESCO World Heritage that is Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range.

Even though I also feel great in an urban environment, on the way I did enjoy admiring the dramatic mountain scenery. Was bliss driving later to Valldemossa alongside olive trees, but also cypress or pine trees shades of green, near the unforgettable Mediterranean Sea coastline. If you are feeling up to it, take also the antique tram from Sóller to the Port Sóller beach, that was a real beauty, for a swimming opportunity.

Scenes that seemed from a movie – Spanish villages in the mountain, colorful squares with lemon groves, while artists are singing flamenco, celebrating life.

Palma travel café

As I enjoy life in bigger cities on a daily basis, I had to see the capital of the island, cosmopolite Palma. Sightseeing here stated near the seaside, at the Gothic Cathedral Basilica Santa Maria or “La Seu”, where even brilliant Catalan architect Gaudí left his mark in the interior. Right across is Royal Palace of La Almudaina, one of the summer residences of the Spanish Royal Family. The tour continues in the narrow streets of the Old city until Plaça Mayor, that made me think of Madrid.

A friends called Palma in fact a mini-Barcelona. It might be true, at least when it comes to architecture, especially on elegant shopping street Paseo del Borne, on their own Rambla, the many galleries, plus the harbor and the area known as La Lonja, behind the cathedral.

Even though I do have mixed feelings about the rest of the southern part of the island, Palma I definitely liked. Due its proximity to nature and a beach, reasons to sample traditional pastry ensaïmada and stop at Mistral Specialty Coffee House after tapas from Mercat de l’Olivar.

Seen through photography

This journey ended where it started, in the transport hub that is Plaça d’Espanya, in a cloudy afternoon, in time to head to the airport.

Reflecting on these days, more than activities by the sea in Port de Sóller, more than a sunset at the beach, I think what I enjoyed the most was the nature hike and a day trip lost through the alleyways of Valldemossa. Or maybe was the combination of all.

  1. It looks so dreamy I would love to visit the small archipelago of islands known as the Balearics to explore its beautiful coastlines, relax on its dazzling beaches, and experience its strong dose of culture and historical towns. Thanks for sharing and inspiring. Aiva 🙂 xx
